We recently published our new global five year strategy that sets out the direction for the future.

May 2021

Welcome to the monthly volunteer update for May

Things continue to move in the right direction for parkrun, with this month seeing events return in the US and South Africa, plus the announcement of the imminent return of parkrun in Denmark and Poland in June. Other countries hopefully will not be far behind. It’s soon time to get those volunteer vests washed and ready!

Now that you’re here, please take the opportunity to have a look around the Volunteer Hub, where you’ll find all that you need to know about volunteering at parkrun.

Virtual Volunteer App & Event QR codes

With the revamp of the parkrun Virtual Volunteer App, one major improvement means that after scanning or timing with your phone, the files are then transferred directly to the event’s results processing system (WebFMS).

To do this, you’ll need to scan the event’s QR code. Events can print these out from the main menu in the WebFMS:

As a volunteer, once you’ve scanned or timed, you need to ask the Run Director for the QR code so you can upload your file. When you first download the Virtual Volunteer App, you are given the opportunity to scan your own barcode, so when you send your timing or scanning file, the system will know that it’s you, and automatically add you to the volunteer roster.

If you haven’t done this when you first download the App, then you still have the chance to scan your barcode after scanning/timing (see image below)

If you don’t have your barcode with you, you can click ‘I don’t have my barcode’ and type in your full name when prompted. This will then add your name to the timing/scanning file, so that the person who is processing the results knows who it is coming from.

As a Results Processor you can see that files where names have been added manually do not have a parkrun ID next to them (see image below). These people will not be automatically added to the volunteer roster, so you have the possibility to look them up and add them manually.

So far we have had incredible success with events using their QR codes to upload the results, with universal use in the territories who have already resumed their events. Teams report that they are very happy at how quick and simple the process of transferring files has now become - we are sure that you will agree!

You can download the Virtual Volunteer App from the App Store or Google Play.

Thanks for reading, we will be back again at the end of June. Until then, wherever you are in the world, stay safe, keep active, and if you’re close to a parkrun event that’s open - see you at the weekend.
