We recently published our new global five year strategy that sets out the direction for the future.

Virtual Volunteer

The parkrun Virtual Volunteer is our official timing and scanning application and is available free of charge from Apple’s App Store and Google’s Play Store.

The Virtual Volunteer app replaces timing and scanning hardware at parkrun events and helps maintain our free-to-participate model as we expand. All parkrun events are now required to be ‘app-only’ and we no longer provide stand-alone timers or scanners.

The app has been designed specifically for parkrun events, is simple to use, provides accurate data, and works for any size of parkrun event.

The app has two functions to help volunteers collect results:

  • Timing finishers
  • Scanning barcodes after finishers have crossed the line and have been given a position token

The information can then be easily transferred to WebFMS or EMS (live and test systems) by scanning a QR Code the Run Director has at each parkrun event.

Setting user’s parkrun ID

When the app is first run you are invited to scan your parkrun barcode. This allows for your results to be identified and a volunteer credit (Timekeeper or Barcode scanner) to be awarded when results are processed. This option can be skipped and set later using the settings icon at the top of the home screen.

Timing

Tap the stopwatch on the home screen to go to the timer. To start the timer, tap play and tap the stopwatch for every person that crosses the finish line.

To send the times, tap Stop and then Submit Results.

Scanning

Tap the barcode on the home screen to go to the scanning mode.

Scan the parkrunner’s barcode first and then the position token. If sound and/or vibrate have been enabled in the device’s settings it will beep and/or vibrate when a barcode is successfully scanned.

Only scannable barcodes will be accepted.

To send the scans, tap Submit Results.

Submitting Results

To submit results scan the Event QR Code that the Run Director will have.

If you saved your own parkrun barcode that will be displayed by default.

Alternatively, the default/stored parkrun ID can be overridden (if the device is used by someone else) and another parkrun barcode can be scanned or a name can be typed in if the volunteer’s barcode is not available.

If the Event QR Code is not available, the file can be emailed. To do this tap Export

and use the phone’s built-in email app to send it to the event’s email address, shown in the footer of each event’s website.
